Why Did I Start Blogging?

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Social Media has taken over. People are using their creativity to promote their businesses and/or websites. Blogging has also been on the top of the list especially this year. I have been blogging on and off for many years but I did not tell anyone. I finally took it serious in May of this year and promoted it.  I have been loving the positive feedback from my readers and the connections I have made with other bloggers. Blogging to me is like a digital journal or diary. Whatever I feel, I write down. It's very therapeutic and also helps me with my creative side. I classify myself as a "Lifestyle Blogger" there is not one specific Niche. I write about everything that my readers and I go through in our everyday lives. I write about parenting, marriage, finances, education, fitness, reflections, and the list goes on. I feel like a lifestyle blog suits me and what I want to put out there. Yes, It looks easy to just take a picture and write, but there is a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure everything looks up to par. I am still a beginner blogger, so I am not an expert. I am still learning as I go. Although I do have a "7 to 3" as a teacher, I am becoming more focused on MY BRAND. There is definitely no shame to saying that. The consistency of making sure to post a few times every week and finding relatable topics is hard but yet rewarding. Although I am not monetized YET. I know I will be soon.

PROS AND CONS OF BEING A BLOGGER

Pros: I can express myself through my writing

Cons: It is time consuming to create the right look and to type a good post.

Pros: I can eventually do sponsored posts and get paid

Cons: ADSENSE takes forever to approve my page... it is also hard work to get traffic

TIPS FOR NEW BLOGGERS

1) Don't give up! If you feel like you want to blog, then go right ahead. Do your research, Find your niche.
2) You do not need to purchase an expensive camera and all of that other technology. As a beginner, just use your phone's camera and download some photo apps(thank me later).

3)  Use Instagram and Pinterest to your advantage. Promote your blog HEAVY

What Brought Me Joy This Past Week (Week 7)

Tuesday, September 29, 2020

This is week 7 of my series "What Has Brought Me Joy This Past Week?" If you haven't already, trust me when I tell you that your week will go by much smoother and less stressful when you take the time to really stop and look at your blessings (big or small). This past week was more so of a reflection and just being thankful.

1) Transportation
I am grateful for having more than one vehicle in our household. Car maintenance can sometimes be expensive and can be hard if that one car is in the shop.

2) Shelter & Food
I am grateful for a place for my family and myself to lay our heads every night. I am blessed to have food in the fridge without struggling.

3) 3 Day Weekend
If you are a teacher or work in the education field, then you know how IMPORTANT 3 day weekends are. I was able to get all the household chores done and spend some quality time with my family.

I hope you all find a few things each day/week that you are grateful for...

What Advice Would I Give My Younger Self?

Friday, September 25, 2020

There comes a certain point in your life where you start to look at things from a different perspective and start to reflect on situations that could've been or shouldn't have been. When I turned 30 a few years ago, I started to look at things differently and felt like I needed to make some changes quickly. I broke it down to 5 tips I would give my younger self.

5) EVERYONE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!!

I had sooooo many friends when I was younger. I would always want to be with my friends and not worry about anything else. My parents always told me having a lot of friends is not good. We never want to believe our parents until we get older. Majority of those "friends" I had are no longer around. I literally have a handful of people I call a friend right now and they have a purpose in my life. If your friends don't inspire you to do good or hold you accountable for things, then they are not your friend. Being around someone that is always gossiping about other people and making fun of them is not some one you should have in your element.

4) STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!!!

There are so many opportunities out there. It's a shame that we all get so accustomed to our habits and environment, that we are afraid to step out of our comfort zone and take that leap of faith and try something new. Staying closed-minded and sheltered will not help you elevate to the next season in your life.

3) DO NOT DEPEND ON ONE JOB... ALWAYS HAVE OPTIONS!!!

I'm not saying to always quit a job. I'm saying that things can happen. Let it be the company going bankrupt, not enough money to pay all employees, relocation etc. You always have to be 2 steps ahead in case anything happens. For example, a lot of big stores and mom and pop shops ended up closing down due to the pandemic. Nobody seen it coming. It's wise to have multiple sources.

2) HAVE A SAVINGS AND AN EMERGENCY FUND ACCOUNT!!!!

We definitely can't predict any issues that may occur in the near future. It is smart to always have money in both a savings and an emergency fund and to not touch it. It is a life saver.

1) CREDIT CREDIT CREDIT!!!!

Bad credit is no joke and I would never want to go back to that again. I got my first credit card at 18 and lets just say I was stupid smh. If you are going to get a credit card make sure you do your research and PAY your bill on time. Always pay more than the minimum payment amount. Believe it or not, good to excellent credit can get you better deals money wise on cars, home mortgages, credit cards and it can even land you certain jobs. Poor -Fair credit will be hard to get things on credit and if you're lucky to get anything on credit, it will most likely be a high down payment etc.

There are other things that I would tell my younger self, but I feel like these were the ones I should have been focused on at a particular point in my life.  What would you tell your younger self?  Let me know.

Interview With Celebrity Makeup Artist, Lina Zuniga

Monday, September 21, 2020

If you guys haven't heard the name Lina Zuniga yet I don't know what to tell you. This chick is making some serious moves in the beauty industry and she is doing it all on her own. I am happy to be interviewing my childhood friend since the 3rd grade and get a deeper look into her brand.

EJ: Who is Lina?

LZ: Lina is a Mother, a Student of Life, a God fearing woman, and an entrepreneur. In that order :)

EJ: When did you first realize you wanted to be a makeup artist?

LZ: I fell in love with makeup when I was 18. I was working at a prestigious bank in Bal Harbour and just had my son. I felt overweight and just didn't feel pretty, so I started playing with makeup. I had a natural knack for it and became obsessed with learning on Youtube. However, I didn't realize I wanted to pursue it as a career until many years later when I was laid off from my corporate job.

EJ: Can you say working for yourself and your brand is hard and time consuming?

LZ: It's the most difficult and time consuming thing of all (yet rewarding) especially in this day and age with social media and the beauty and technological trends continuously evolving.

EJ: Which celebrities have you worked on thus far?

LZ: Ashanti, Cardi B, Becky G, Natti Natasha, LeToya Luckett, etc.

EJ: I know Jlo is your favorite. Do you still want to work on her? lol

LZ: Not sure what you mean by "favorite".  I Admire Jlo as a powerful Latina Woman. She's beautiful and a strong business woman and I would love to follow her footsteps. Sure I would love to do her makeup, however my "favorite" most inspiring woman that I  would jump at the opportunity to glam is Alicia Keys.

EJ: What pushes you everyday?

LZ: The fact that abundance is my birthright. While I'm on this earth I will have everything I ever wanted and worked hard for. Which is wealth, health, and financial freedom for myself, my son, and my family. When you have that kind of faith, nothing can stop you.

EJ: Has social media made it easier for you to promote your brand?

LZ: Social media is a gift and a curse haha. But yes, definitely important for becoming a known makeup artist and very helpful in attracting new customers.

EJ: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to pursue a career in the beauty industry?

LZ: Fall in love with the art and the process. Success will follow. Practice your ass off.

EJ: Tell us about your product line and where it is available for purchase.

LZ: I started Lina Zuniga Makeup back in 2018 with my 3D Mink Lash Collection (Cruelty-Free). I'm excited to announce that we have just launched a new product, "The Makeup Hand Palette" which is a hands-free solution for mixing cosmetic creams and liquids without those messy stains on the back of your hands! We are expecting this to be a hot trending item since the beauty industry hasn't seen anything like it. You can purchase both at www.LinaZunigaMakeup.com

I hope you all enjoyed this interview. Show some love in the comments :)

What Brought Me Joy This Past Week (Week 6)

Sunday, September 20, 2020

Happy Sunday guys!!! Im back for another week of reflection and gratitude for the past week. I hope you all had a great one like I did. This week I have quite a few things that brought me joy :)

1) Paid another credit card off
Listen ya'll, your girl is NOT playing about being financially free. I am so blessed to have the ability to pay off credit cards on the weekly basis and boost up my credit score even higher. Financial freedom is VERY important.

2) 2 blog interviews in one week
I am taking this blog site very serious and I am so proud of the accomplishments that I have made.I was blessed enough to interview 2 woman go getters who are changing the game in their own way. I have one interview posted already with Mental Health Advocate, Ashley Bianca Jones go ahead and click it. The 2nd interview will be posted later this week (It's a good one)

3) Accomplished all of my goals in my planner
One of my goals for the month of September was to have a "me day" and I finally had a couple of hours to myself to get a pedicure and healthy nails. Last week, I had set a goal to accomplish all of my daily tasks Monday-Saturday and if I sticked to it, I would get my nails done as a reward to myself.

4) Fitness
I worked out everyday this week and there were days were I felt so tired and unmotivated, but I forced myself. Although it was a 15 minute walking workout on YouTube, I feel real good about completing the workouts. Next week, I will try to make it 30 minutes everyday.

5) Reading
I fell off the reading wagon. I had set a goal to read at least 12 books for the year and I have been on my fourth book for 2 months now lol. I am so proud of myself for reading a chapter everyday this week. I will now try to read 2 chapters a day and get back on track.

I think this was one of my greatest weeks because I had set small goals and rewarded myself for accomplishing them. A reminder for when you set goals, make sure they are realistic and if you don't get to accomplish them all, please just grant yourself some grace for getting something done.

How was your week?

DIY Candle Wax Melts

Tuesday, September 15, 2020

I love me a good candle, however I always find myself having an issue when it is almost done. I can never get it to burn anymore when there is clearly enough wax left. I discovered a way to salvage the leftover wax and it WORKS! All you need is a butter knife, and a wax warmer.

Make sure your wax is NOT hot. Grab your butter knife and start scraping the leftover wax inside the candle jar and place them on top of a warmer. Then, get a tea light candle and place it inside the warmer. (I got my warmer from the Dollar Tree and the tea light candle from Walmart.) Once the warmer gets hot enough, your wax will melt and you will start to smell that wonderful fragrance around your lovely home.

Hope you enjoyed reading this quick DIY Hack. What are some hacks that you recently discovered?

Interview with Professional Mental Health Advocate, Ashley Bianca Jones

What is mental health and why is it such a taboo in some cultures? According to Google. "Mental health is the state of someone who is functioning a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment." I believe mental health is a taboo in some cultures because some families do not discuss their issues amongst one another, fear of embarrassment, fear of judgement, and the thought of having to see a therapist alone can be a reason. I think everyone may have went through a season of dealing with some type of mental issue. Let it be depression, anxiety, or even stress. It is how we deal with it that determines our true mental health.

In observance of Suicide Prevention Month, I had the pleasure of interviewing one of South Florida's Mental Health Advocates, Ashley Bianca Jones. This woman is making some serious moves within the regions of Broward and Miami by getting individuals together in one room to speak on mental health within their communities.

 EJ: Tell me about yourself?

ABJ: My name is Ashley Bianca Jones. I’m a mental health advocate and event specialist. I am also the founder of The Come-Union which is a space/gathering that gives others an opportunity to freely speak their truth while normalizing the conversation on Mental Health. I actively work with different organizations such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), and AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). I am also certified to teach Mental health first aid courses.

EJ: What made you become a mental health advocate?

ABJ: My own personal struggles with mental health influenced me to become an advocate. I realized that there were other people facing similar struggles as I was. Not only that, I also realized that there was a lack of understanding on what mental health was and how to better assist those facing challenges.

EJ: Why do you think people are afraid to talk about mental illness?

ABJ: Easy. Because of the stigma associated with mental illness. They’re afraid of being judged for speaking out and asking for help.

EJ: Do you think social media plays a huge role in mental illness and why?

ABJ: These are really great questions. Absolutely. Social media comparison is very real. Often times, we beat ourselves up about not being where we’d like to be in life. So imagine logging onto Instagram, for example, and you see someone posting the highlights of their life…because that’s what people mostly post. Automatically, pressure is going to be applied because you feel that now, you need to be where that person is. Or have what that person has. You start to feel less than when really that isn’t the case. We don’t know what that person had to go through to get what they have. We don’t know if it’s a façade. People rarely post the negatives. When you take selfies, are you going to post the one you least like? Absolutely not. Always remember, not everyone is who they “post to be.”

EJ: What are some tips, strategies, or resources that you can provide for someone who may need it?

ABJ: First things first, practice self-care. Do positive things that make you feel good about yourself. Get involved with your local NAMI/AFSP chapter. Joining those organizations has truly opened doors for me and brought on great connections. Be gentle with yourself and understand that your feelings are totally valid. Be around people who bring the best out of you. Practice positive self-talk. Go to therapy if you feel you need to. There is nothing wrong with it. It doesn’t make you crazy. It makes you brave and strong for getting the help you need!

If you are battling with mental illness, please do not be ashamed. There is plenty of help out there. I hope this interview was able to provide you with some insight on mental illness and how to deal with it head on. Leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts. Thank you again to Ashley Bianca Jones for this interview :)

Thoughts on the Brandy Vs. Monica Battle on Instagram

Sunday, September 13, 2020

You guys, I am still talking about this Versuz battle between these young women that happened about 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure I'm telling my age because I was more excited about hearing their old music from the 90's. In which now that I think of, I should've not been listening to or singing lol. Anyway, this battle was epic not only because it's Brandy and Monica but the fact that these women had a beef for years and none of us knew why. I believe people change and I know that times and situations also change peoples mind sets. Ive been preaching this for months But I honestly feel this pandemic has made some positive shifts as well. I never thought that I would see these two ladies in the same room let alone talking to each other.

For those of you who know me really well, knows that I love me some Beyonce' HOWEVER, she does not make music that hits all of your emotions all at once like these two right here. I love old school R&B and it just brings me back to a peaceful place. Their music talks about love, heartbreak and the list goes on....

Back story to the beef between Monica and Brandy
Monica and Brandy both were at the top of their careers and sadly the media portrayed them as rivals. Monica was more street/hardcore while Brandy's image was a sweet girl from around the way. They both had great vocals but two different personalities. In my opinion, I didn't see anything wrong. Word in the street was that the girls never crossed paths until Brandy wanted to collaborate together with Monica on the hit song "The Boy is Mine" (I literally just found out, that was Brandy's song). Allegedly Monica did not want to work with her, but eventually did. Fast forward, they did the song but I heard they recorded their versus separately and when it was time to shoot the music video, it was very awkward. They did not speak to one another on set. Fast forward, rumors escalated that Brandy performed the first live performance without Monica and she was used about it. Then years later on they performed "The Boy is Mine" at the VMA's award show. Crazy thing about that, is they got into a fight right before performing. Monica allegedly punched Brandy in the face.  That was the last time we seen them perform let alone be around each other..... Until now :)

More than a decade later
2 talented producers by the names of Timbaland and Swizz Beats created something that will be the talk in the music industries for a long time. In the beginning with the Covid-19 mess going on people were not able to go out like they use too because everything was shut down. No bars, no clubs, no games, no concerts etc NOTHING. Everyone was basically home with family. The idea of having artists battle 20 of their songs each on Instagram was a very smart idea and great entertainment for us all.  Each time the ratings and responses from fans grew and grew. It cam to the point where everyone was suggesting who should go against each other. Brandy and Monica came up quite a lot and I believe one of them declined in the beginning. Then a few months later, word got around that they would do it. However, Monica said she needed to have a conversation with Brandy before she would move forward. In which they did talk.

The end result and a lesson for women
The ladies sat down together and helped us reminisce about the good ole times through their music for two hours. Although, the vibes seemed a little shaky, I as well as everyone who enjoys their music was happy to see them in the same room being cordial with one another. We can't expect them to be best friends or even friends overnight. The fact that they were both mature enough to talk prior to the battle and settle their differences, shows us women that we too can all get along and get that paper (money) together. Society wants us to be against one another and sadly, we are falling for it. The fact that a beef that was going on for more than a decade and these women are laughing and hugging each other now is progress. I noticed a lot of people talking down on Monica's demeanor. You have to remember, she has street appeal and she's not with the shits. She speaks her mind and she seems like a real one. No one can change that.

My favorite all time song from Brandy is "Sitting up in my room"

My favorite all time song from Monica is "Before you walk out of my life"

What is your favorite and Brandy and Monica song?

What Brought Me Joy This Past Week (Week 5)

I can't believe it is week 5 of this blog series already!!!! This week was a very short and quick one for me. There was no school on Monday(Labor Day). I enjoyed my 3 day weekend to the fullest!!!! There were soooo many things that brought me joy this past week but I had to really narrow it down to my top three. Here we go:

1) Paid off some more credit cards
I am so happy and blessed that I was able to pay off some balances on my credit cards. I am a step closer to my goals and I have God to thank for that.

2) Day date with my husband
I am so grateful and blessed to have my in laws come last week and take the girls for the day. My husband and I used that time and went out on a day date and we had a blast. If you have kids and family far away, then you fully understand the struggle sometimes. If you haven't read the blog about our date here is the link Day Date With My Husband.

3) I did not take any work home
Now, I'm speaking from a teacher's point of view. We always take work home, or go online and find work or resources for the next day or two. Since going back to work. I vowed to NOT take my work home. WORK is WORK and HOME is HOME. I did very good this week. My teacher bag was placed in the corner when I got home and I did not touch it until the very next morning. The moment I clock out of work I am no longer in teacher mode. I am on family ONLY mode.

I hope you all enjoyed your past week and I hope the same positive energy follows you all into the new week. What are some things that brought you joy? Let me know!

Mommy Guilt And Tips To Overcome It

Friday, September 11, 2020

If you are a mom, then this blog is for you! First and Foremost, I want to personally say "YOU ARE A GREAT MOTHER" do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Motherhood is NOT an easy job. Although being a mom is a blessing, it is very challenging and overwhelming too. As mothers, we wear many hats. We are moms, doctors, therapists, referees, chefs, playmates, pastors, best friends, and sometimes rivals lol(depending on the child). The issue that we all possess, is that we do not feel like a "good mom" the question is though, "What is a good mom?" In my opinion, a good mom is a woman who takes care of her children, keeps them safe, and has fun with them. But guess what, a good mom also DISCIPLINES her children too. I'm going to simplify Proverbs 13:24 "If you don't correct your children, you don't love them. If you love them, you will be quick to discipline.

I don't know about you all, but my daughters test me EVERYDAY and EVERY chance they get. So I get it lol. We are not perfect, No one is. We get so overwhelmed with working outside the house, housework, taking care of ourselves, all while making sure we are keeping the little humans alive. It's a lot. So yes, it is perfectly normal to have an off day or two, or three, heck a whole week. It is also okay to yell geez.

Now, I'm not saying to verbally abuse your child because that's just stupid, but I mean we are human for goodness sake, we all scream or yell at some point during the day. It's okay sis! If your child is hard to deal with it and you have a partner, spouse, boyfriend, fiancé whatever at home with you, ask for a few minutes quiet time for yourself. We all need a little break. If you are a single mom, and have close family or friends you can trust nearby, don't hesitate and ask for help... ONLY if that family is not TOXIC because that will defeat the purpose. Most of the time the guilt is not from our children, it comes from how we are feeling after a situation WITH our children if that makes sense.  The most amazing thing though about children is that no matter what, they are so innocent and understanding. They are very loving and have a pure heart. Remember, God created them for you and ONLY YOU for a reason. If he didn't believe you were fit to be a mom, do you think you would be one? Below, I have some tips that I believe will help for that mom who feels guilty, overwhelmed, or just tired.

TIPS
1) PRAY PRAY PRAY

2) Meditate

3) Pamper yourself

4) If your children are old enough, talk to them and express yourself. Speak from the heart.

5) Write down your feelings in a journal

6) Take a hot shower and cry it out

7) Put on some earphones and listen too old school 90's R&B (TRUST ME)

8)  Drink ice cold water and just lay down for a few minutes

9) Speak affirmations into your life... CLAIM GOOD THINGS on yourself and your children

10) Don't SCREAM and scare your kids. (It's easier said than done, but practice it. Use a stern tone instead.)

11) GRANT YOURSELF GRACE... YOU ARE A DOING A GREAT JOB!!!

To ALL moms from a mom....Don't beat yourself up and always remember no one is perfect....

Day Date With My Husband

Monday, September 7, 2020

Driving around the town with my love

Happy Labor Day guys! I'm so happy to be off! Although the weekend went by fast, I'm happy that I was able to get my household back in order and spend some quality time with my husband. I'm so grateful that we have family on both sides that are able to watch the girls if we need them too. However, my in-laws popped up on Sunday to pick up the girls for the day, and I decided to use that opportunity as a way to get out and spend some one on one time with my husband.
You know you've been together too long when ANYTHING is fun lol. We literally got dressed up and went driving. First stop was Starbucks of course! We then walked around the mall and did some light shopping. We also went to get my wrist sized at Pandora and to also pick out my bracelet and charms. We then got lunch at Chipotle and came home and watched a movie on the couch. It felt really good to just spend some quality time together with no kids because WE DO EVERYTHING WITH THEM! One of the things we did together recently was stay at a resort, if you haven't read the blog, check it out here Mini Staycation at Hutchinson Island Resort.
For any couple that has kids and want to spend some quality time together, please do it. Spending time together as a couple is very important. Even if its sitting on the couch watching a tv show together.
Here are some things you can as a couple WITHOUT the kids: Get creative and check Pinterest for ideas.

-Drive around a neighborhood you are interested in moving in one day and look at model homes.
-Drive around a couple of nearby cities
-Go out to eat
-Go shopping
-Go to the beach
-Cook something together at home
-Watch a movie or TV show on the couch
-Play video games
-Spend alone time (Hint Hint) lol

What are some things you like to do with your significant other?

My September Goals

Wednesday, September 2, 2020

When I think of the month of September, I think of all of the changes (Weather & Fall clothing) and of course PUMPKIN SPICE added to my Chai Tea Latte. Any who, the month of August went by so quick and although I completed everything that I needed to do, I basically woke up and went with the flow. It worked for me at the moment, BUT I felt like I was all over the place and found myself exhausted at the end of the day. For the month of September I want to set some goals.

September Goals

1) Read a book and finish it. (Read  1-2 chapters a night)

2) Do NOT take school work home

3) Me Day (mani/pedi, massage or facial)

4) Write 8 blog posts

5) lose 5lbs (eat healthier and workout 30 min daily)

It's best to set some realistic goals and not to overwhelm yourself with many tasks.

What are some goals that you want to accomplish for the month of September?

Elizabeth Jacas
